Key House Race Called in Kentucky To Replace Thomas Massie

President Donald Trump’s endorsed Republican Ed Gallrein has won Kentucky’s Fourth Congressional

District election Tuesday. Gallrein, who defeated longtime Rep. Thomas Massie in the Republican primary earlier this year, will ensure the seat remains in Republican control. Gallrein defeated both Democrat Melissa Strange and Libertarian Jeremy Todd in the general election. Gallrein’s rise began with a confrontation between Trump and Massie over the president’s legislative and foreign

policy agenda. Trump publicly endorsed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL and fifth-generation Kentucky farmer, against the seven-term congressman. During a March rally in Hebron, Trump declared, “Ed Gallrein has my complete and total endorsement.”

The president followed with another unmistakable instruction to Republican primary voters. “Just elect him,” Trump said, before adding, “You’re going to have no problems with him.”

Trump also described Gallrein as “a real hero,” highlighting the challenger’s lengthy military service. Gallrein served approximately three decades in the Navy and rose to the rank of captain. His campaign biography credits him with four Bronze Stars and assignments involving elite Navy SEAL units. His family has longstanding agricultural roots in Kentucky, and Gallrein has emphasized farming and small business experience.

Trump previously called him a “Brave Combat Veteran” and a “very successful

Businessman” in an endorsement statement. The president praised Gallrein’s stated commitments to border enforcement, crime prevention, and Second Amendment protections. Those positions became central to Gallrein’s pitch for representing a heavily Republican congressional district. Trump’s support was especially consequential because Massie had repeatedly opposed administration priorities despite sharing the president’s party affiliation. Massie criticized Trump’s

tax legislation over deficit concerns and challenged his administration’s approach to the Epstein records. He also opposed aspects of the administration’s military operations involving Iran, creating additional friction with the White House. Trump attacked Massie’s record in unusually personal terms while urging Republican voters to replace him. The primary became one of the most expensive

House nomination contests in American history. Outside organizations spent heavily, including groups critical of Massie’s foreign policy positions and his disagreements with Trump. Gallrein won the May Republican primary with approximately 54. 9 percent against Massie’s 45. 1 percent. Certified primary figures recorded 57,822 votes for Gallrein and 47,539 for Massie. That result ended Massie’s

bid for another term after serving in Congress since 2012.

After his primary victory, Gallrein described the contest as a difficult challenge

against an established incumbent. “It was a David versus Goliath,” Gallrein told Fox News following the primary election. “I was the underdog,” he added while thanking Trump and supporters for their assistance. Massie defended his independence, arguing that principled disagreements should not be mistaken for disloyalty. Some Republicans supported Massie’s positions on spending restraint, congressional

oversight, and releasing Epstein investigation documents. He described himself as a “Reagan Republican” and identified smaller government, lower taxes, and constitutional freedoms as priorities. He also advocated military strength designed to deter conflict rather than produce additional wars. Democratic nominee Strange campaigned on affordability, concerns about political corruption, and opposition to unwanted data center development.

Libertarian Todd emphasized reducing government waste, opposing foreign conflicts, and representing voters dissatisfied with both major parties. Kentucky’s Fourth District includes communities across northern Kentucky and has consistently supported Republican congressional candidates. Campaign finance disclosures showed Gallrein raising substantially more money than Strange during the general election period. Those resources enabled broader outreach, although fundraising

totals cannot establish voters’ preferences or guarantee an electoral result.

Trump’s endorsement demonstrated his involvement in shaping the Republican congressional delegation, not

simply campaigning against Democrats. Gallrein’s stated priorities include immigration enforcement, tax reductions, constitutional protections, and greater cooperation with the White House.
